This book was cover-to-cover war and war preparation. It was constantly entertaining, but I couldn't connect to the characters like I'd been able to with the previous books in the Valdemar universe. The ending was wrapped up perfectly I think, so I might not read the sequel, but if I do I will be going in with the high hopes of it being just as entertaining as this.
