James by Percival Everett
1.0
I cannot comprehend why this book has succeeded as much as it has. It fails on practically every front outside of it's initial concept. The writing is flat and bland, and it's entire goal of fleshing out and giving life to the character of James is left completely unaccomplished. By the end of this novel, Everett's James feels far more empty and undefined than it's source text.
I really was looking forward to reading this after all the praise it received. But instead I found lazy, dialogue-heavy writing, a nonsensical plot, and a questioning of my own sanity!
