The Very Secret Sex Lives of Medieval Women: An Inside Look at Women & Sex in Medieval Times (Human Sexuality, True Stories, Women in History) by Rosalie Gilbert

informative reflective slow-paced

3.0

This really was a mid-range read for me. Had some parts I liked - particularly the point highlighting that most Hollywood costuming has it wrong RE peasants wearing drab ill-fitting clothing. The flow/layout of the chapters makes this well presented and provides an easy to follow narrative thread, which is a must-have for accessible non-fiction. I also enjoyed the inclusion of women’s own words from court cases, letters, and diary entries and it would have been good to see more of this.

But there were parts I disliked - namely the ‘recreation’ dialogue scenes. Which featured imagined conversations between medieval individuals based on situations/experiences just explained. They dragged on, had forced humour and overall added nothing to the information and because of this they didn’t humanise or provide connection to the situation/experience they were  replicating. Lots of points throughout were repeated beyond just re-contextualising or for emphasis. Sarcasm was overused and so had less of an impact or humour than was probably intended.

It would have also been good to get more of an idea of how/if women enjoyed sex in this period and generally more ‘opinion’ pieces. But this might not have been possible been due to a lack of original source material.
