Half a King by Joe Abercrombie
4.0
4/5⭐️
These days I’ve steered away from YA due to some novels in the past that were, in my opinion, lacking to say the least. However I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Could just be because I really love Abercrombie. Maybe. Probably.
I loved the coming of age tale of a crippled prince on the path of revenge and to prove himself and everyone that he is deserving of the crown that was thrusted upon him.
Abercrombie’s writing is SO good in this. A bit more serious in tone, less humour than his other works but incredible nonetheless.
The side characters were fun although some were a bit bland. I liked Jarvi a lot but just think he can sometimes be a bit too “lucky”.
He had his bout of misfortune at the beginning but since then things seem to go his way more often than not. Despite that, I think he’s quite well written.
The story isn’t ground breaking or insanely unique, however it has heart. The characters are relatable and the word is built quite well. The politicking isn’t as well developed as some of Abercrombies other works but I understand why you wouldn’t want a YA book to be too political. Personally, I felt like it was too toned down. Just my opinion tho.
I will definitely continue with the rest of the trilogy.
What a great start!
