The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

Trying to decide on a star rating for this one was tough. I struggled through the first 2/3 of this book. I expectedly to absolutely love every second (like the first two books). I think part of it was how many perspectives Sanderson has us following ... and some of them were characters I didn’t care about (Cough - Spook). Then there’s Sazed’s perspective. He’s a completely different, completely broken man, grappling with grief and loss of faith. I understand why Sanderson harped on that (both in terms of character development and in terms of the plot itself), but it felt repetitive after a while.

But as the book progressed, I was in complete awe of Sanderson’s world building. How does he come up with this stuff? The world is so intricate, so well fleshed out. The last 200-300 pages were so fascinating, so gripping that I just knew it was going to turn into a 5 star book

Then there’s the ending. I’ll try to be vague, but I wish it could’ve been different. I knew not to expect a perfect happy ending after the first two books. While I get the ending and think it was a much more realistic ending without everything neat and convenient, I still didn’t love it. It left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, quite honestly. Not because it wasn’t entirely happy, but more because of the weird religious elements. Sanderson seemed to be hitting us over the head with it and I wished there’d been a different resolution.

So I don’t know how to rate this. The first 2/3 of the book was 3.5 ⭐️. The next 200 pages were 5 ⭐️, but the ending was a 2.5-3 ⭐️.
