The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

5.0

"He was a king."

I am speechless.
Heartbroken.
In awe.
And in mourning.

After nearly four years of my life spent loving and worshipping The Raven Cycle and each and every single character and word in it, it is over.
I won't write a review for The Raven King.
I can't.
I found this last book absolutely magnificent.
And I get why people would be disappointed by the ending, but I found it perfect in its unfinishedness. I wasn't expecting a "happily ever after" or a tidy ending.
I knew Maggie wouldn't have given it to us, because an ending like that would have been out of place, incompatible with everything this series is.

Instead, this ending was also a beginning and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
It is much better for my grieving heart to continue to imagine the future adventures and quests, the unresolved mysteries and questions still keeping all of the characters busy and happy.

I can't write a decent review but I'll say this:
Maggie, thank you.
For Blue, who is my favourite girl and dreams of trees and stars, for Adam, who is unfathomable and practical and privileged, for Ronan, with his fiery heart and unwavering loyalty, for Gansey, who is always seeking, always finding, who is a true king.
Thank your for their heartstopping and extraordinary friendship.
Thank you for the other wonderful characters, for the beautiful words, for this beautiful story.
A story I won't be forgetting anytime soon.

“Safe as life.”

“Unguibus et rostro.”

“It was this: this moment and no other moment, and for the first time that Gansey could remember, he knew what it would feel like to be present in his own life.”

“He was a book, and he was holding his final pages, and he wanted to get to the end to find out how it went, and he didn’t want it to be over.”
