“Maybe he'll get what he deserves. Maybe Not. Maybe I'll never find it in my heart to forgive him. And maybe there's nothing wrong with that, either. All those maybes swimming around my head make me think that ‘maybe’ could just be another word for hope.”
“He's not the hero and he's not the enemy and he's not a god. He's just a boy. And I'm just a girl, a girl who needs to pick up her own pieces and put them back together herself.”
this book was really moving and honestly so sad but so so important i think a lot of people would benefit from reading it. the main themes of the book—rape and sexual assault—are very heavy so i would only recommend this if you are able to deal with that. that being said, i really liked the book even though it definitely broke my heart because it is difficult to read about that stuff. it made me so angry, but it really gives you a sort of insight into the mind of someone who has been through such a traumatic event and the kinds of things that she deals with and why she doesn’t tell anyone for years.
it’s about the journey that eden goes through following the rape, and how it completely changes her as a person and hurts her relationships with others. i don’t think anyone who hasn’t experienced it can actually know what it feels like or understand why she “couldn’t just tell somebody” but i think this book helps to answer some of those questions, or at least understand them better, because it’s not easy at all.
overall the ending of the book is hopeful and it gives a voice to those who have been silenced. really good book.
