The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

3.0

I liked this book. In another life I might have loved it. But in this little life I had stupidly high expectations - and we all know that these will usually let you down. I love Matt Haigs books so much, but somehow 'The Midnight Library' didn't move me as much as his other works. It is of course beautifully written and you sail through the pages. And I also liked the idea: a library between life and death that lets you visit any of your possible lifes. But I felt the characters lacked a little depth and I had the feeling that each of them solely existed to teach me a life-lesson. At the same time it was obvious what this lesson would be - after a few pages I knew how this whole story was going to end. I still kept on reading of course, because over all it was still an enjoyable story.
Maybe I just was not in the right mind-set for this. I am sure that in another life, where another version of me never stopped terrorizing herself with the 'What-if?' questions, I would have found comfort in this book. I would have needed to read it. Maybe I even would have found it mindblowing. But in this current life the book was just fine.
