Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda
4.5
I really loved this book. It was beautifully written. I would read anything Claire Khoda writes.
It really was a perfect fall book. It was eerie but also really mellow. It’s a nice book if you don’t want a lot of plot and just want to curl up and relax with a book.
With that said, I really appreciated its commentary. The main character, Lyd, is mixed race, along with being half vampire and half human, so the book spends a lot of time showing her grappling with her identity, this being exacerbated by her father having died before she was born and her mother being incredibly toxic. Her relationship with her mother was one of my favorite parts of the book. It reminded me of both Crying in H-Mart and I’m Glad My Mom Died. If you liked those books, I think you’d like this one. It also deals with feminism and racial fetishization.
It didn’t give me that “oh shit” feeling that five star books give me but I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about this book.
