Music Is History by Ben Greenman, Questlove
5.0
I picked this up as the Big Library Read, and really enjoyed it. The focus is on what Questlove calls Black contemporary music: soul, R&B, and hip-hop, which are not areas I know much about, so I found myself looking up songs throughout. This is, however, more a collection of essays about how we view history, what gets remembered, etc. They are both universal and deeply personal, and form a brilliant whole.
Also, I described it to a friend as "an antidote to the Chuck Klosterman book I read last month," and that sums up my feelings much more succinctly.
