"and even on those days when one or both of us is having a hard time, we'll be here, where we are completely known, completely accepted, by the person whose every side we love wholeheartedly. i'm here with all the versions of him i've met over twelve years of vacations, and even if the point of life isn't just being happy, right now, i am. down to the bones."

edit, a year later: oh my god i love this book. i forgot how much, and i definitely love it way more than i did the first time i read it so i upped my rating to 5 stars. there are literally no two characters on this planet who are more perfect for each other than poppy and alex. through all those years of what-ifs and other boyfriends and girlfriends and vacations and wishing and longing, they know each other so well. they know each other like the back of their palms and it's truly one of the most romantic things i've ever read. the thing that made this book so good in particular was how character focused it was. emily henry just has SUCH a talent for writing real, raw, flawed characters, because they are flawed, and that is one of the main focuses/important parts of the story because it's the reason they kept missing each other all those years and never realising their true feelings for each other or at least never acting on them because they were too scared. i loved the way it was written through flashbacks of their past vacations, juxtaposed with their current trip to palm springs for alex's brother's wedding and seeing how they and their relationship with each other has changed but also how many things have stayed the same because they are just meant for each other. throughout the book you really get to study/watch alex and poppy grow as people and eventually finally get what they deserve, which is each other. i loved the ending, and it really makes you think of all the little things in life and how lucky you will be someday to sleep next to your favourite person in the whole world and just feel so overwhelmed with happiness that they are your person. this is the kind of love everyone deserves <3
