Summerland by Michael Chabon

Do you want to read a novel about fantasy baseball? But not the dudes drafting MLB players in their rec rooms kind. The kind where some little leaguers are playing on a island in a point of flux between worlds and now it is up to them, their bats, their skills, and their ability to take a deep breath and swing to save us all from the nefarious Coyote and his plans.

Ethan and Jennifer T. are friends and Roosters. Jennifer T. is really pretty good, but Ethan is not. He can't hit or field and he gets a lot of errors, which makes him more prone to daydreaming through a game than not. But Ethan and Jennifer T. are champions, too. Born into and led into a life that allows them to see ferishers, to travel among the branches of the World Tree, to free sasquatches, and to pitch and catch like they're on fire.

Chabon's inimitable style comes across clearly in this youth or young adult novel. His descriptions are charming and wry, and he never pulls punches. The emotions of the novel are clear and straightforward and its logic is impeccable, if filled with cute references and puns. Overall a great novel and a total joy to read.
