Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

I loved this story, about a man with retardation who becomes a genius. It underlines the cruelty of people who think disability is a big joke. I felt very sad for Charlie, who just wanted to have friends. Who, instead, didn't realize that his "friends" were really just making fun of him. Until an experimental surgery trebled his intelligence. He always wanted to be intelligent, but realized that intelligence alone wasn't a recipe for happiness. Very worthwhile read, and food for thought. This story is trending because of an experiment to put elements of human neurons into rat pups. It isn't the same as in this story, but has promise to shed light on some human genetic maladies.

I definitely recommend this story because it tells of Charlie's persistence and courage, especially when he learns of Algernon's fate, the mouse who had the surgery first.
