If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him: The Pilgrimage of Psychotherapy Patients by Sheldon Kopp
4.0
I had to explain the title to curious askers and then summarize the book as the title sounds kinda offensive, although it really isn't.
That being said, this should be read by the greater public and not just within therapy and metal health circles.
The books outdated but its message isn't; therapists aren't know alls and a clients belief that they are is the wrong way towards any kind of breakthrough. Instead, we have two pilgrims on their own paths dealing with an all too human universal: suffering.
There are many proverbs, maxims, platitudes, and myths so if you're looking for something a little less airy or abstract, this may not be a good read. However, this did help me understand both the therapeutic process and the relationship between therapist and client in such a way that I will reread this periodically in case I need a refresher.
In short, I found it insightful and worthwhile.
