Solid four stars.
I went into this book thinking it'd be a funny horror. I was surprised by how graphic/intense it was at times! I enjoyed the writing style a lot and there were some scenes I found truly disturbing! e.g. the little girl killing her mother by biting into her neck and the dad coming home to both of them dead/dying! Or the slug entering the girl's vagina.
I liked how the book was layed out. The chapters of random incidents and the story progression of Mike Brady were done really well. It flowed quite naturally and I finished the book relatively quickly because of that.
In the author's note Hutson says that he initially wanted to go with eels. I don't think they would've had the same effect. I'm glad he went with slugs.
I didn't quite like how the story concluded to be quite honest though. It felt too rushed, too clumsy when compared to the strategic layout beforehand. Palmer dying was quite sad :'( But brady and Foley just going off and dumping an explosive poison into the sewer system? Guessing/Hoping that the snails have a hierarchy? There had been no proof of that. Barely any signs even to the reader. I think I would've preferred there to be a "queen" of sorts. So they could've at least dumped the poison onto the root cause.
The ending just felt like 10 chapters have been skipped. I was kinda hoping for Brady to die...
It would've also been interesting to see the reaction of others to the corpses. But I understand that the main focus were the slugs and their murder, so I'm not too fussed about that.
