Slight spoilers ahead, though not in detail.

The completion of this duology was a bumpy ride of emotions. I will say that the writing was clean, clear, and created a story that you became invested in as a reader. It was not drowned in 'woe is me' when our heroes were parted. It was a divergence from my normal readings. I liked that the magical typewriters kept finding their way back, almost as if they were trying to keep our heroes together, in spite of the war of the gods pulling them apart. It seemed that the typewriters were characters themselves, willing characters back together. The romance is very innocent (it is a YA; I have read some books that were listed YA but worked in the grey just behind the line of being labeled NA) and makes the reader emotionally invested in the innocence being taken away due to war. The author has noted that this duology is heavily influenced by WWI and Vera Brittain memoir of those years, and the impact that war had on the younger generation. For those who have either read her memoir or seen the movie (great watch!), you will see the influences in the stolen moments the characters have. From the first page of Divine Rivals to the last page of Ruthless Vows, the author demonstrates in her characters how the war our heroes are forced into took away the rose-colored glasses of youth.

By the ending, you will need a tissue or two because it’s war and everyone loses someone before it’s done.
