An unpopular view but I thought this book was very mediocre. I read it through to the end but it was very much take it or leave it. I have read a few books lately that set out to tackle big issues and themes and by doing so seem to get high ratings and it almost feels uncaring and insensitive...even unclever not to recognise some important point or other in it......But for me, some of these books lack some depth and explore those issues only on a surface level. I didn’t get the sense of a rounded narrator with a real personality...more a flat vehicle for a story that is current and important. The book felt like box ticking...and it ticked so many boxes it covered nothing in a way that felt new, nothing that made me rethink a way of seeing things, nothing that made me stop and sit in awe of a clever way something important was tackled. I am not saying that story isn’t valid or important but I want more from my reading than I got here.
Sorry if you liked it..I just was not in awe of this.
I think I have come to realise that Womens Prize books just seldom do fit with what I like to read.... I tried...and failed to appreciate this one.
I gave this two stars originally but it bothered me enough to downgrade
