This book is so clever and silly! I love it!
It takes place in the 1840s on an independent island off the coast of South Carolina called Nollop. One by one, those in charge remove letters from the local alphabet and language and residents are prohibited from using them. If they do, they face beatings, banishment, or even execution. "Z" is the first letter to go, and by the end of the book, they've lost all letters except for LMNOP (Ella Minnow Pea).
After "D" is banned, the new days of the week are announced as follows:
(Sunday) Sunshine
(Monday) Monty
(Tuesday) Toes
(Wednesday) Wetty
(Thursday) Thurby
(Friday) Fribs
(Saturday) Satto-gatto
At one point, the schoolhouse is referred to as the "learny-house" and November becomes "Novemgroogy" or "Novempoopy!"
This book is for everyone, but especially those that enjoy words, word games, and language.
