Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
5.0
Rogerson's books have all really worked for me as they are my exact brand of fantasy drug, but this one is definitely my favorite so far. I adored Artemisia in all her socially awkward introvertedness, but I adore even more that she forged connections with others when needed and saw the importance in community and friendship. Having a book that emphasizes friendship so much is a nice shift as well. It isn't a sub-point of the book. It is THE WHOLE POINT. This is manifest in the bonds between Artemisia and her revenant for sure, but also in the other bonds the two form with others along the way. It is an interesting look at how all people have layers and complexities. I really do hope there will be more stories set in this world because it was intensely interesting. (I have a lot of thoughts on the religious system, the fifth order revenants, and the saints.)
