How to Be a Good Creature: A Memoir in Thirteen Animals by Sy Montgomery
1.0
Bold of Goodreads to ask me for a finished date because I could not bring myself to finish it (I gave up halfway). I'm the kind of person who does not abandon a book even if I don't like it; I believe even mediocre books can teach me something. But even I have my limits with books that do nothing for me save wasting my time.
Not too long ago my Literary Criticism professor mentioned that one does not need to publish everything one writes. I though that was too harsh, but upon reading this book I realized he was right. This did not need to see the light. This could have stayed a manuscript with a note on top saying "NEEDS WORK" or simply "REJECTED". I see that the author has plenty of books, all of them focused on animals, which I dare to assume are good or at least OK (I'll never know) and I think that's a lane she should have stayed in. One needs to be 1000x cooler or fictionalize a little bit better to write a memoir worth reading and this... this is not it.
Time and time again a recommended bestseller with a nice title and cover does this to me. Cover designers/illustrators need to stop being this good with books that are not.
