The book is a cycle. A very simple cycle at that. The main character is very inconsistent and unbelievable even for being an Irish legend. I'm not talking about the fantasy elements of course, just that the main character has dementia.

That being said if this is your type of fantasy, it's fine. Just don't expect a good adventure per se. (just this book not the others in the trilogy)

The "sadness" feels artificial with death being the main trope.
The book can be summed up pretty easily. Goes somewhere, stays there a two maybe three chapters leaves. This isn't a big issue if you're following the main story.
My theory of why the book is like this: many of the elements of this story isn't part of the original, so they kill off/ leave so it still follows elements of the original once it gets to that point.
