Nevada by Imogen Binnie

5.0

Maria Griffiths is a 29-year-old trans woman whose life in Brooklyn fizzles out so she "borrows" her ex-girlfriend's car and embarks on a road trip to...Nevada. In a one-Walmart town she encounters James P.  who might be Maria's former self? He's a 20-year-old boy who really really wants to wear a dress, and has a girlfriend, but truly it's his own self, in a dress, he wants to sleep with.

One day Maria walks into Walmart and James can't tell if she's a murderer or a movie star. Whatever. Who cares. All that matters is he's intrigued. And so is she.

What an introspective and joyful adventure. I expected to learn from Binnie. I did not expect to laugh so much with her. This book is fantastic. Maria is the breath I didn't know I needed.  She's raw and honest and accessible and achingly down to earth.

Resoundingly a sharp and intimate story about human connection and the quest to be understood, Binnie's frank insight into the human aspect of of the trans experience couldn't be more refreshing or relatable.
