Beach Read by Emily Henry

4.0

I loved the lead characters, the banter, the slow burn romance, and how everything resolved in the end. Honestly, this would have been a 5 star read if it hadn't been for the genre gymnastics Henry seemed to be trying to successfully land. As much as January seemed to be defending romance novels, she was quick to point out that she wrote women's fiction and not "werewolf or pirate books". For a novel that falls very clearly in the romance genre, Henry seems a little dismissive of that genre's readers. I find this interesting as it's published by Berkley, an imprint who became what it is BECAUSE of the romance genre but has desperately been trying to rebrand itself the last couple of years--particularly as this book was amongst its earliest efforts at that rebranding.

I'm still going to read Henry's other books as I don't think it was intentional snobbery or done with ill intent.
