Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
5.0
All 3 books are brilliantly written. The Wolf Hall trilogy follows the life of Thomas Cromwell, the chief counselor of King Henry VIII during the Tudor period. Mantel's writing style might seem a little difficult at first because she uses the pronoun "he" a lot to refer to Cromwell instead of using his name. Until the reader gets used to this, it might be hard at first to know who is the speaker in the characters' dialogue. However, once we get used to this idiosyncrasy in her writing style, it stops being a problem. The writing as a whole is absolutely beautiful and the story engrossing! Historically, Thomas Cromwell has been viewed as evil. While definitely he is not all that innocent throughout this trilogy, still Mantel gives a different spin to his personality that makes us sympathize with him. In fact, this is the strength of Mantel's work. None of the characters is one-dimensional. We get to feel some internal conflict and sympathy even for the most despised and seemingly evil historical figures (arguably, with the exception of King Henry VIII).
