I really wanted to like this book. I have read a couple of other twisted tales in this series that I thoroughly enjoyed. But this one...?

The writing was... a lot. I like very descriptive writing, but this was over the top. Did we really need FOUR different visual descriptions to explain the red color of the mermaid's hair????? I'm also not sure if the writer is insufferable, or if Wendy (whose pov we are reading) is insufferable. Some of the words chosen were quite obscure, that I would find myself frustrated trying to figure out what is being said.

Which leads me to my next point... I found most of the characters to be extremely unlikable. The only ones I did like, of course, ended up being so incredibly minor that they basically weren't in the story. Shame.

And the climax? The end of her adventure in Neverland? Well, it was certainly unexpected.
. 🙄 It was the most anticlimactic part of the entire book. Literally, NOTHING HAPPENED. Just "No need for that; I think you guys won." What?! So disappointing.

Lastly, these are twisted DISNEY stories... I come here for a lighthearted good time. I'm not against some sort of moral to the story, of course, but this... it was a lot in your face it felt. And at least pick one? Are you arguing feminism? Racism? Poverty? Misogyny? Just "the wrongs of the world" would have even been fine, but trying to kind of get into each of them but obviously not having enough time or space for it made it unable to get into any of them. Again, while still clearly throwing it in your face.

I'm hoping the rest of this series holds up better. Since the other two I've read did, I have high hopes that this was the only not good one.
