The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson

5.0

4.5 stars. I really liked this. It caught my attention and made me want to get back to my book, even when I had other things to do. I don't think I'd really read the blurb, just enough to see "Jack the Ripper" but I didn't really know what to expect coming in. This had a fun, contemporary feel. Rory, American girl off to school in London. Lots of humor. Just some funny things like ...

"I know you’re not supposed to judge people when you first meet them—but sometimes they give you lots of material to work with."
"Annoy a Southerner, and we will drain away the moments of your life with our slow, detailed replies until you are nothing but a husk of your former self and that much closer to death."
"She ran up and down the field with that stick like a thing born to run up and down a field with a stick."

Some Spoilers below (although not much more than if you read the blurb)

So right off, there were these gruesome murders going on, and then here and there a chapter would switch from the 1st person POV of Rory to someone else, and we'd get a peek setting up something odd. It turns out that Rory can see ghosts - a new talent after she almost choked to death. There are others, a little "ghost police force" and apparently the murderer is a ghost. Some of them can move things physically and such. So the mystery goes on from there. There was one moment that I was like "Did that just happen?" ... it really caught me off guard.

I liked the ending, wrapped this up, while setting things up for a sequel, which I do plan on reading. I borrowed the kindle copy from my local library and I've placed the next one on hold. I probably would have continued on immediately if it had been available, but I've got a few weeks to wait.
