The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith

5.0

Before you start reading, you need to understand that you will be uncomfortable. This is a story about rape. Not about young love, not about empowerment, but the devastating aftermath of a young girl getting raped in her own bed.

It is heavy and difficult but please make it to the end. The character and every person who has been raped deserves for you to face your discomfort and read until the end. Do not turn away from a reality that many people have to deal with.

Throughout the book, I continued to expect the usual tropes of the young adult genre but, repeatedly, Amber Smith challenged me. There would be no quick-fixes or sparkly romances to fix the central tragedy. By the middle of the book, I realised that I had to adjust my expectations and be uncomfortable not knowing where it was going to end up. Smith did a great honour to victims everywhere with this novel. I feel that she honoured their experiences and related it well to readers who want to understand.

I really can't recommend this enough. Perhaps it's too mature for young adults but please read it. Then you might as well pair it with the fantastic documentary, Hunting Ground. It helps give you a real life outlet to help victims of rape.
