Beautiful, rigorous, yet accessible (re?)framing of the Jewish religious tradition. Held is intentionally provocative with his title and thesis, but I think his reasons are noble. Too long Jews have been told that they are not a loving people--at least not compared to their Christian neighbors. This book seriously challenges that view and gives readers a perspective on Judaism that is both revelatory and shockingly obvious. To paraphrase, Judaism isn't only about love, but love is very much a crucial part of its essence.
It was a bit of a slow read for me due to the scope and reoccurrence of the book's main themes. But Held has something new to add in every paragraph, so I recommend you stick with it even when things are feeling dry. And it could be a lot worse! You need not know anything beyond surface-level Judaism to follow his discussion. He walks a fine line between intellectual/religious rigor and accessibility, and I think he does the best he can under those constraints.
