The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
4.0
As an enjoyer of the Freida McFadden thrillers, this book kept me thinking, is her books really worth the hype? or at least this one's not her usual best work. But I knew a twist was coming, after all I have read SIX of her books prior to this. But even then, the twist really had my jaw dropping. It was all there, and still took me the one chapter before the twisty revealing that I saw how carefully every "useless" scene made sense.
I actually wanted to give it a 3.8 stars, but there's no option for that here. Anyways, I love Freida. I love how her writing can make a non-reader or even a grumpy businessman be so hooked on her books, and I know why. Her language is so easy to grasp, so easy to flip through, and entertaining as hell. At times, one may wish some literary masterpiece-like writing, but in her defence, I'd say that she brings out individual narratives in the forms of people's thoughts and personal perspectives. We get the views of multiple characters and how they are thinking and behaving. Gives us a scope to play out the detectives ourselves. Isn't that what thrillers are actually for?
To sum up, I'd probably enjoy reading every thriller she ever writes, but having read and absolutely LOVED her books like The Teacher, Ward D, and The Housemaid, honestly, this one was a little average for me. But liked reading it nevertheless.
3.8 stars.
