The Deal by Elle Kennedy
5.0
Lets address the obvious… The cover might not be the best, but the contents is completely wonderful.
The Deal follows Hannah who was raped when she was 15. It is something she has dealt with and worked through, but it has resulted in her having an unfulfilling sex life. Until she spots Justin in one of her classes and she finally feels excited again. But of course, the life throws her a curve ball by the name of Garrett. He begs Hannah to tutor him and eventually she gives in as Garrett is the star hockey player at their university and he agrees to fake date her to get Justin interested.
I picked up The Deal for the third round of the smutathon which took place last week and I don’t think I would have picked it up otherwise as it is a sports romance and I have never thought that would be my thing. I am not really into watching or competing in sports so I thought a vast amount of this would go over my head. But, in the end, it was fantastic and sports didn’t feature that heavily at all.
Hannah and Garrett’s banter was the highlight of the book for me. Garrett is stubborn and pushy but in a really cute way. Hannah perceives him as a egotistical jerk but he takes it in his stride and plays on it to wind her up and I loved it. Garrett is also totally upfront with Hannah. He’s just unflinchingly honest which I really appreciated.
Slowly, both Hannah and Garrett’s guards come down and they become close friends who care for each other. I love that you can see how much Garrett is starting to care for Hannah and how he protects her and treats her with respect, he is there for her and a constant source of support. They are vulnerable with each other but they also have some undeniable chemistry.
I read this in one day as I could not put it down. There was a wonderful balance of seriousness, vulnerability and chemistry, there wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book. I am excited to carry on with the series and that my eyes have been opened to sports romances!
