This book might be the most adorable thing I've read in a long time!
I would categorise Spell Bound as a cosy urban fantasy. It gives all the cosy feels while being entertaining and magical.
Edison Rooker, aka Rook, applies to work for the most powerful sorceress in ages despite having no magic himself. He's convinced he can be part of the magical community where he feels he belongs by inventing a device to see ley lines and wants to test it.
However, he not only joins up with Antonia Hex but falls in the middle of a rivalry between sorcerers and secrets that affect him, too. The cute and grumpy apprentice of the rival sorcerer, Sun, is just the bonus.
The story escorts the reader through magical rivalry, rebellion against the system, and Rook and Sun's awkward stumbling into friendship and more.
I loved how simply entertaining the story was. There is never a dull moment. But the most amazing thing in this whole book has to be the characters and their interactions.
Rook is a genius, yes, but he's a tad awkward and tends to blurt out whatever's in his mind.
Sun is this grumpy intorvert who just wants to finish high school and learn magic. They are reluctantly getting closer and closer to Rook, and it's sweeter than sweet.
The two rival sorcerers, Antonia and Fable, act as guides to the two young apprentices. In two very different ways. While Antonia is wild, rebellious, and arrogant, Fable is patient, quiet, and follows the rules. Their approach and teachings are present in Rook and Sun, too.
I loved the interactions between Antonia and Rook. Antonia's stoney uncaring personality hides a deeply caring woman.
The star of the show, however, is Rook and Sun's strangers-to-frienemies-to-friends-to-lovers relationship.
Their initial awkwardness and badly hidden attraction towards each other is sweet. The way they figure out their feelings is hilarious and made me giggle with excitement more times than I can count.
I just wanted to hug them.
While a lot of the focus was on the characters and the ambience, the boom also had a hidden plot and an exciting finale.
Overall, I loved it and will definitely read more from the author!
