Poetry of the Universe: A Mathematical Exploration of the Cosmos by Robert Osserman, Robert Osserman

informative fast-paced

4.0

I found this book at Deseret Thrift for one dollar. I bought it with the intention of gifting it to Macy, but I wanted to read it before handing it over. I'm very glad I did. It read like a scientific history book connecting knowledge from eighth grade science, Comp Sci III, DC calculus BC, the literature and history podcast, and beyond. I initially intended to only read a chapter or two, but once I picked it up, I found myself unwilling to put it down.

I do not consider myself someone who enjoys nonfiction, especially not on scientific topics (social commentary, history, memoirs, etc. are more my cup of tea), and yet this little book proved more captivating than I thought possible. It tells of momentous mathematical discoveries in chronological order, naming individuals (whom I both have and haven't heard of) whose contributions have fundamentally altered our understanding of not just our world but the universe as a whole.

I highly recommend listening to music while reading this. It is a shame I was unable to annotate this copy as I'm giving it to Macy. If this book finds its way into my life again, I will be sure to take my time reading it as opposed to devouring it in one sitting as I have just now. Math is so beautiful 😊 this book was very evidently written by someone with an immense appreciation for the beauty of mathematics, and it's all the better for it.
