The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty

5.0

This series has genuinely rewired my brain. Officially my favourite fantasy series I’ve ever read. Also shoutout to Chakraborty for not killing off any of the main cast but still creating suspense and compelling plot with loss and sadness but also an ending with joy and peace and hope. Dara’s ending broke my heart, but it makes sense for him. I agree with Nahri, it hurts to think about what the future may have held for them had the events of the trilogy and even decades before in Qui-Zi not happened. But there’s no point in it. Dara found purpose and I like to think his is a story that ends in peace for him. I also think Nahri’s trauma is depicted in a very real way in the end of the book. It’s all over, but she has not known peace Ever in her life and doesn’t know how to act with it just yet. It’s not like everything ends and she’s immediately jumping to marry Ali and live a new life, but she’s cautiously hopeful. It’s very real, and made me really happy for her. Also finally seeing the siblings all together again made me almost sob, as a middle sister of two brothers it made me think of my own family so much. Anyways this series is fucking incredible and an absolute gift to the earth.
