Burmese Days by George Orwell
3.5
This novel is perfect for my dissertation, and full of lucid commentary on the nature of imperialism. It is exemplary of Orwell’s incredible intelligence, and to me suggests he was almost too clever for his own good. I somehow see his self-hatred manifested in Flory. I am looking forward to writing about it! Interesting debate to be had on authorial intent— how much sympathy should one have for Flory? Is Elizabeth to be entirely condemned? Does it suggest a latent homosexual subtext?
