Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger

5.0

I picked Ordinary Grace up after reading This Tender Land and LOVED this! Very plot driven, Minnesota small town setting post WWII, 1960's. Coming of age story, 13 year old Frank is spending his summer doing what young boys do - roaming the town to find swimming holes, listen in on gossiping old men and peeking over the fence at the neighbor's lacy underwear. All goes awry when there are a series of deaths that change that small town - and Frank's family forever. There was a fair amount of foreshadowing, so I could predict where the story was going minus one mystery question that was solved. Don't expect twisty turns but it does read very much like This Tender Land, which nostalgic adventure of a bygone era - think A Christmas Story, Simon Birch, anything with a father figures recovering from PTSD in WWII and problems that are spoken about in hushed tones but the youngsters are very adept at eavesdropping. In fact, most of the plotline in Ordinary Grace moves forward because of Frank and his brother Jake's penchant for listening in when they shouldn't be. Second 5 star read by William Kent Krueger - love his writing, characters, settings and plotlines.
