The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

5.0

"Sometimes I want to tell her, the only person in this house who isn't heard is me". Poet X is beautiful story told in poetry of a young girl's journey to find her voice in a world that makes women feel objectified. It's Xiomara's quest to be seen and heard yet avoiding the constant unwanted and unsolicited male gaze. Poet X is her struggle to find her own identity and make a way in the world that only wants to silence her. Xiomara finds herself in slam poetry and spoken word.

Xiomara's story fills told through a series of different poems. Each one is powerful, emotional.and riveting. Poet X is a story that I could immediately identify with and I saw so much of my younger self in Xiomara. Poet X is the first story in a long time that made me feel seen and made me get so emotional that I immediately started sharing it with others. Xiomara is the type of character that has fierce inner strength and makes you want to be just like her. She has a fire in her belly and she uses that rage to speak her truth and finally challenge long standing problematic beliefs and behaviors. With every new sentence, I found myself loudly cheering for her. Xiomara is a character that transcends and overcomes daily adversity.

The author excelled in creating multifaceted characters and tackling tough issues in a poetic style that is relatable yet full of depth and emotion. Acevedo brought to the forefront the Latinx female experience in a cathartic way. She created characters that represent the history and spectrum of the Latinx experience. Poet X is a must read for any young woman in the world who feels the world is trying to stifle her fire. Thank you Elizabeth Acevedo for this masterpiece!
