Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton
3.0
Okay, I honestly didn't know what to think of this book when I finished this.
I know this was realistic fiction/romantic tragedy but I just couldn't really get into the plot on the emotional level. Like I didn't feel for Ethan and Mattie's romance at alllll. And also what type of suicide is running into a tree with a sled? Sure it's a tragedy but I feel like it'll just end up making things worse in the end. Which they both got the worst of I assume. At that moment, which was probably the climax of the plot, I did have a *gasp* moment, but I don't know, it was a weird choice of double suicide.
The plot ends up being a bit ironic as Zeena who is an invalid/sick needs to take care of the two lovers who tried to kill themselves but just ended up broken and more of a burden to Zeena than ever. I do like how the author had the different POVs, and it came kinda "full circle" at the end. Overall, a good romantic tragedy to start with, and there's a lot of stuff to dig into in the text, but also not my favorite.
