Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore

Did not finish book. Stopped at 31%.
I loved Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You, Scotto Moore's novella so I gave this one more of a shot than I probably should have.

There are some key issues:

1. Each character is introduced with skin color and pronouns but the cast is almost all white and seemingly cis.  There was one person with they/them pronouns who I don't think was introduced this way and one Black man. It was so cringey and performative.

2. In addition to this, the main character's voice is so hokey, talking about "phat beats" and "as the kids say".  The narrative went from convincing to irritating and distracting.  So many things are happening to or around the main character that it's such a passive plot in a way. The character exists to make the plot make sense to us and doesn't sound or feel real.

3.  The plot is a mess and, from what I've read here, that doesn't change.  It was taking too long to get where it was going with an interesting story at first. I really liked Part 1 and was thoroughly bored by Part 2.
