Engaging from the very beginning, I was carried along by the beautiful writing, lovable characters (especially the Dragon! <3) and the twisting and turning dark mystery of the Wood. I found myself just barely breathing for pages on end, so enthralled and thirsty for the story was I. Where some authors might try to get away with one or two battles, Novik builds greater and greater challenges for the characters to overcome. She manages to keep the truth of the Wood a mystery until the very end, and what an incredible truth it is! At the end, I felt like I’d read a really old folktale that was both comfortingly familiar and entirely new. This is a mandatory read for anyone who loves fantasy and folklore. No joke.
