This is a perfect YA fantasy to me.
While the world building was lacking on around the edges, a couple of questions didn’t get answered and the ending was a little rushed I DON’T CARE because it was still SO FUCKING GOOD!
I did not want to stop reading, the writing and the setting fully pulls you into this world. The characters were fleshed out and felt like real people. All of the characters felt like they were the right amount of maturity, especially considering the horrible circumstances. There is a romance because what YA doesn’t have a romance, however I really enjoyed this one as it was more subtle and felt appropriate for the setting and characters.
While being a YA, it had a grim dark feeling and still pulled off feeling hopeful. The overall mystery was fun and I did not see a certain plot twist happening and I gasped. So that’s a plus for me.
If you like the Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne, this novel has a kind of similar vibe, and if you like Corban from the later books, you will definitely like Cas.
