Based on real events, The Kew Gardens Girls follows some of the (in this book, fictional) women who took over working in London's Kew Gardens when WWI broke out and the men were sent to the Front. Sprinkled with heaps of suffragette-action, as well as family-relations and the "found family"-trope, and told over the course of several years, we get to join them in the ups and downs of life during a part of the war.
I have strangely mixed feeling about this, because on the one hand I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and found the characters real and enjoyable, but on the other I just.. could not stand the writing of it. Every feeling was told, and several scenes that were supposed to be very emotional and gripping were just.. told. I never really felt it. I really, really liked the story, just not the way it was told.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
