The High House by Jessie Greengrass
5.0
This is exactly the kind of climate fiction I’ve been craving! A story showing how “the future has slipped into the present”, where actions not taken or taken too late mean that weather can’t be predicted anymore and natural disasters have reached the areas most responsible. In the UK, a scientist, more aware than most, prepares “the high house” for her son. The book flows between him, his half-sister and a woman who had been taking care of the house as they reminisce how they came to live together. It’s all so poignant, heart breaking and realistic - not just in terms of following real climate scenarios, but also in the way the characters react to what is happening. In the end, The High House is as much about their inner dialogue than it is about showing what we’re in danger of inflicting upon ourselves.
