Emsley is at a low and turning point in her life when she finds a diary belonging not to her grandmother, as she thought, but to Vincent Van Gogh's siter-in-law Johanna. The dual timeline explores Emsley's growth and Johanna's quest at independence while ensuring the world knows Van Gogh's works.
I loved this book from the start and didn't want it to end. The writing was beautiful and - unexpectedly - humorous. The characters were likable; I only wish I knew more about the real people written about, but that gives me more reading to do :)
I would have loved a photo section of Van Gogh's works, as well as the other artists mentioned in the book but that also was easy enough to look up.
I already want to read this book again!
