I always start reviews not knowing what to say, and then I end up writing a huge one. I hope to achieve something shorter here but that really shows what I think of this book.
I love Ashley's stories, she's one of my favorite authors, and no matter what she writes, I know I'm going to like it. This one is no different. Although it took me a little longer to connect with the two MCs, as the story progressed and they opened up, I was able to "feel" them more.
Amazing how, coming from two different backgrounds, Caspian and Rowan had so much in common. Both suffered from neglect and both kept everyone at arm's length. Something that was more noticeable in Caspian, since he didn't hide his desire to be left alone, being his bandmates the closest to him, and even so, he didn't open up completely with them either. In Rowan's case, it was more subtle. He was always surrounded by "friends", always partying, but soon one realizes those friendships were superficial. Nobody really knew him.
But where Caspian was more closed and grumpy, Rowan was more relaxed, always trying to show a smile, trying to hide behind a cheerful attitude what hurt him.
They met when both are sent to the Black Diamond Island rehabilitation center and despite the fact that at first Caspian didn't want to have anything to do with Rowan, soon the latter began to break the wall that surrounded Caspian. And even though Caspian ended up pushing Rowan away, he didn't give up until he made Caspian realize that they were meant to be together.
I was given an advanced copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
