The Black Girl Survives in This One by Saraciea J. Fennell, Desiree S. Evans

4.0

We’re surviving and getting our get back!

The Black Girl Survives in This One is an enjoyable anthology that flips horror stereotypes surrounding Black characters, specifically Black women and the final girl trope.

This young adult collection does a great job holding readers' attention with a variety of stories that bring so much to the table—curses, aliens, creatures, mythos, zombies, and more. Some stories will definitely resonate more with certain readers, but I had a few favorites of my own. (The Skittering Thing, The Black Strings, TMI, Fox Hunt, Black Girl Nature Group, and The Harvesters, which was simple yet effective.)

What stood out to me was how this anthology really played with different elements of horror while giving us a fresh perspective on Black people in the horror space. It was fun seeing classic themes and tropes reimagined in such a creative range of ways.

Honestly, I’d love to see this turned into an anthology TV series. The variety, the execution, and the representation all made this a worthwhile read.
