I was immediately drawn to the premise of Spies Don’t Fall for Their Asset by Meg Easton. I love the idea of a woman who is a fan of spy movies accidentally and unknowingly ending up in the center of a clandestine operation. How hilarious! And Jace does such an excellent job of keeping Mackenzie in the dark about his mission, but never at the expense of her feelings. I love how Jace is able to be totally genuine and real with Mackenzie, but also be a good secret-agent man. This definitely led to quite a few laugh-out-loud moments. Overall, the characters are great. Mackenzie is highly entertaining, in and of herself. She had me laughing quite a bit. I do appreciate her issues with men, and totally understand her one-date-only rule, but I was super stoked when Jace blew through her emotional walls. Jace is the best kind of hero — the must-protect-his-loved-ones-at-ALL-cost kind of hero. I love men who are protective. To me, it’s the swooniest characteristic, and Jace brings it full force. I really loved the journey to love Jace and Mackenzie traverse. It begins hilariously, moves into a sweet friendship, and ends in an endearing romance. And it is pretty believable, all things considered, because this story is about characters going through emotions. They just so happen to be doing that in a Mission Impossible-like scenario. My one and only issue with this book is the length. This book is SO long…450+ pages. Actually, the length isn’t really the issue. The problem I faced is with all the internal monologuing. There is so much internal monologuing that there is internal monologuing within the internal monologuing. It was way too much for this dyslexic girl. I got lost in the meandering thoughts and had to re-read whole passages to try to figure out what was going on or being thought. I got confused several times. But this is just my issue. My brain had to work super extra hard to stay on top of the character thoughts, and that is OK!
Overall, I highly recommend Spies Don’t Fall for Their Asset. This book is a lot of fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this book. If you enjoy spy stories and romance then you will love this book.
