Little Thieves by Margaret Owen
5.0
This book is like: what if I took my revenge on the people who hurt me, deprive them of everything they own and are to make a new life for myself, without feeling a bit sorry about it?
I loved that Vanja is this sharp, unforgiving thief who is selfish in order to protect herself. She has some trauma that affects her life, and because of that she doesn't trust easily. She's clearly a morally-grey character. I, for one, love a selfish female MC who knows relying on people is not the way to change one's fate.
I think the author did a fantastic job with the character development. Vanja learns there are good people somewhere who understand her. She also discovers that there can be more to a story that meets the eye. She learns to let people in, even if it means she can be hurt.
Which brings me to Emeric, our sweet lonely boy. The romance between him and Vanja is so sweet, pure and honest I was awwwing the entire time. It's slow-burn and adorable. I also love the catch-me-if-you-can vibe. I wish we had more of this dynamic in the romance aspect in general instead of the hot shallow bad boy I don't care about.
As to the magic system, it's cool that Vanja can see Death's and Fortune's touch. It gives some tension as we're wondering what misery is going to befall our characters.
I feel like the ending was slightly rushed but I admit I fell for the trap haha.
