We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

5.0

Brilliant book that tries to tackle some genuinely terrifying questions (or one big question - what if a mother doesn't love her child?). The content of the book itself is quite hard to read at times, but a really interesting investigation into motherhood and the parental bond, and strong it really is.

It actually reminded me of Stephen King at times - although there was nothing supernatural about it, it was very much a horror story about the horror of human psychosis and emotions.

The structure of the story was also enjoyable; letters detailing the events chronologically, but also written with hindsight. Coming from the central character also allowed to explore Eva's thoughts and motivations. The only time it did slightly bug me was when there were obvious 'hints' dropped in - like, I didn't know what was going to happen next!' or 'You know what happened after.' Which were obviously written to hint at alter things, and keep the suspense going for the reader, but (probably because I am really impatient) I just wanted her to reveal everything.

The twist at the end was also quite nice, and once more revealed even more about Eva, which is always nice.

The novel is really about exploring human relations and reactions, and it does it really well.
