The Marionettes by Katie Wismer
4.0
I enjoy the world building, really like the characters. I appreciate that there's no overt romance in book one (besides a few scenes with a past boyfriend) so it doesn't feel like insta love. In general the book is taking it's time without feeling slow (in the romance, plot, and lore), which isn't common in this genre of instant gratification. Book 1 is sort of an introduction and not a complete story, the next book picks up moments later. I started book 2 immediately and it has the potential to be five star series depending on where it goes
I don't have any real criticisms except white authors really need to stop using Native American mythology/cryptids in their stories without even really knowing the history or significance of them. Indigenous beliefs are not your playthings and you should really leave wendigo and skinwalkers alone. You are imaginative enough to make something new
(Side note I hope there's more about Kirby's queerness because I love her and she deserves happiness)
