Shanghai Immortal by A.Y. Chao

3.0

I love Asian inspired fantasy and as this was part of a subscription box it was perfect for me to read it

It starts off with an interesting premise, I liked the immortals existing in a parallel Shanghai with all the fantastical elements that follow. I also appreciated the historical references around this period of time, you can tell research went into this

The main character is an interesting one, she has quite a large personality with lots of sass and does what she wants, she isn’t the most shy and retiring. You’ve been warned. There’s also some focus on phobia/trauma which added some depth to her

The pacing of this book is its downfall. It almost flips it’s focus halfway through focusing on the predictable romance, this consequently I thought took away from the excitement of the story and the world

Overall, it has its fun moments and it’s harmless but that’s about it. I can’t help but feel that there are quite a few missed opportunities here though
